Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company presents

Unswerving energy, eccentric puppetry and live music in a re-potted version of this world-famous and much loved children’s story.

Mr and Mrs Chickweed are an avid gardening couple who can’t resist planting one last seed before they retire. They play music to their vegetables on the accordion and banjo and often can’t resist a song or a night-time garden tango! But as the enormous turnip grows, it threatens disaster! Join us at Luton Library Theatre to find out what happens with this garden mad coupl and their giant turnip...

About The Enormous Turnip

The Giant Turnip or The Enormous Turnip is a children's fairy tale of Russian or Slavic origin. Itwas written by Alexei Tolstoy and was first published in 1863 in the collection called Russian Folk Tales. The Enormous Turnip is a progressive story, in which a grandfather plants a turnip, which grows so large that he cannot pull it up himself. He asks the grandmother for help, and they together still cannot pull it up. Successively more people are recruited to help, until they finally pull the turnip up together. The specific ordering and set of people and sometimes animals varies.

Stuff and Nonsense have updated the story to tell the tale of a couple who are prize-winning vegetable growers but with different ambitions. He wants to travel the world and she wants an enormous turnip. The conflict that ensues is both entertaining and moving. The show involves live music, a mouse dancing at midnight and an unfeasibly large turnip!
