Kadam/Pulse presents

The Rose and the Bulbul takes audiences on an immersive journey through the gardens of Stockwood. Whilst exploring the site in detail, it ranges across time and space in order to tell a moving story of love and acceptance. The travelling Bulbul comes from war-torn lands searching for his Rose and for safety. Meanwhile Rose, unhappy and misunderstood, has lost her sense of her identity. Together they share their histories, which are represented by a Mughal and a Tudor garden, and they gather up pieces of a broken heart.

Professional dancers, actors and musicians work with community artists to tell this family-friendly story, notably featuring acclaimed Coke Studio Pakistan artist Arieb Azhar. In an inclusive and celebratory way, the performance brings communities together.

The Rose and the Bulbul is a family-friendly performance with professional and community-based performers that taps into the love affair that humans have with creating gardens. It will be dedicated to the memory of MP Jo Cox: “We are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us”.

The performance brings together the outstanding talents of actor-writer Kamal Kaan (While the Water Weeps Next to the Water, BBC Radio Headline Ballads 2016); director Sita Thomas (Bush Theatre, National Theatre, Channel 5 Milkshake!, PhD scholar) and innovative choreographer-dancer Kali Chandrasegaram.
