High Hats is a Luton Culture regeneration project supported by the High Town Team, local organisations and volunteers all who have an interest in regenerating the High Town area.
The project has enabled an empty shop in the High Town area of Luton to be converted into a hat shop and micro-museum.
High Hats has an assortment of hats and fascinators for people to look at and buy, including some hats that are perfect for ladies with weddings to attend! Prices range from £5 - £200, and there is lots to capture the interest of locals too, with displays about Snoxalls and workshops on everything from creating your own fascinator to decorating hat-boxes.
Shop address : 77 High Town Road, Luton, Bedfordshire LU2 0BW
Opening Hours: Thursday 11am - 5pm, Friday and Saturday 10am - 5pm
High Town’s Hat-Making History
Within High Town there were hat block manufacturers, bleachers and dyers, bonnet sew-ers and box makers, as well as suppliers of feathers, ribbons, flowers and other materials. The High Town area contained a mix of larger factories and houses with rooms built onto the back for use as family businesses. Many families produced hats which were sent to destinations all across the world.
The High Hat project is based in the exact building in which a straw hat manufacturer named Minnie Bonner worked over a hundred years ago, from 1894 until about 1898.
